What is a migraine?

Migraine

Migraine (hemicrania, half headache) is one of the most common neurological diseases affecting 10-12% of the world's population.

Migraines are characterized by severe throbbing pain that occurs on one or both sides of the head.  The headache is of an offensive nature and lasts from 4 to 72 hours. Migraine pain is often accompanied by:

  • Nausea
  • Light and noise intolerance
  • Numbness of limbs
  • Weakness
  • Short speech disorder

Migraine risk factors:

Several factors contribute to the development of migraines, including:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Psycho-emotional stress
  • Eating and sleeping disorders
  • Genetic factors, which are of great importance

Migraine forms

One of the most common forms of migraine is migraine with aura, also called classic migraine. Aura can be:

  • Visual (flashing dots in front of the eyes, flashes of light)
  • Olfactory (sensation of unpleasant smell)
  • Motor (numbness of limbs, weakness)

A phase of agony follows aura. A differential diagnosis is required to rule out significant illnesses because headaches are a common symptom of many disorders. A visit to a neurologist is essential for this.
